Ecuador's government says the weekend maintenance power cuts are over.

Primicias reports that the government announced the end of the second day of scheduled electricity interruptions on Sunday, May 31, 2026.

The work was described as maintenance intended to strengthen the electrical system ahead of the possible impact of El Nino.

What The Government Said

Primicias reports that after 7:00 on Sunday, Jose Julio Neira, secretary of Public Integrity, confirmed on social media the "fin de los trabajos" and the restoration of electricity service nationwide.

The outlet says that statement contrasted with the official schedules from seven electricity distribution companies, which still listed interruptions after the announcement.

Where Complaints Continued

Primicias reports that Guayas was one of the provinces most affected by the scheduled disconnections on May 31.

The official schedule listed at least 33 interruption events for Sunday, including 18 cuts scheduled to begin or continue after 08:00.

Users in Guayas also reported that service had not returned on schedule or that outages were linked to unattended faults.

In Guayacanes 2, in northern Guayaquil, users reported damage from 11:00 the previous day and said they waited more than eight hours for a crew to be sent.

Residents in Salitre and Puente Lucia also complained that service had not been restored at 06:00 and 04:00, respectively, despite those return times appearing in the schedule.

What This Means For Expats

If your power came back, the national maintenance event may be finished. But the practical lesson is that local failures and schedule mismatches can still matter after a national announcement.

For homes, rentals and businesses, keep screenshots of local utility notices and report faults through the distributor's official channels. The national headline does not always match the neighborhood experience.
