Crypto holders looking at Ecuador residency often ask whether they can use their portfolio instead of buying Ecuadorian real estate or opening a local certificate of deposit. The careful answer is: possibly, but owning crypto by itself is not the Rentista Visa requirement.
Ecuador's temporary Rentista Visa is for applicants who can document personal, lawful monthly income. The published requirement is income of at least three Salarios Básicos Unificados (SBUs). Ecuador's 2026 SBU is $482, making the current threshold $1,446 per month.
What the Rule Actually Focuses On
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs describes the relevant evidence as documents certifying lawful personal monthly income, whether from abroad or Ecuador. It gives examples such as lease contracts, investment titles and similar sources.
That is different from a rule that says, "show us a certain crypto balance." A large balance may help explain the source of funds, but it does not automatically establish recurring income.
Where Crypto May Fit
A person whose portfolio produces a real, consistent cash flow may have an argument to present. For example, an applicant might be able to document a recurring conversion of crypto to fiat, followed by a matching deposit into a bank account.
A stronger file would connect the dots between:
- the applicant's exchange or custody records;
- the origin and ownership of the assets;
- each actual crypto sale or withdrawal; and
- bank deposits that demonstrate at least $1,446 in monthly income.
A few months of genuine, regular history will normally be easier to explain than a single large sale made shortly before applying. Applicants should never create artificial transactions merely to make a visa file look stronger.
Documentation Needs Careful Planning
In addition to the visa-category evidence, temporary-residence applicants generally need a valid passport, criminal-record certificate, health insurance, payment of the applicable fee and evidence of lawful means of support. Foreign documents may need certified Spanish translations and apostille or legalization, depending on the document and where it was issued.
One common point of confusion: a bank or exchange statement is not necessarily a document that can simply be apostilled. Ask a qualified Ecuador immigration professional which evidence needs notarization, apostille, legalization or translation before paying for document work.
Investor Visa Is a Different Route
The investor visa is often the better-known option. Its qualifying investment benchmark is tied to 100 SBUs, or $48,200 in 2026. That route has different requirements from the Rentista Visa and should not be confused with it.
What This Means for Expats
A crypto portfolio may be relevant to an Ecuador Rentista Visa case if it can be documented as lawful, reliable monthly income. It is not a published, automatic crypto-visa category.
Before relying on crypto for an application, have an Ecuador immigration lawyer or experienced visa consultant review the actual statements, transaction history and proposed evidence. This is general information, not legal or tax advice, and Ecuadorian authorities decide applications case by case.
