Ecuador's security picture is not the same everywhere.
From January through May 2026, the country recorded 3,485 violent deaths. The coastal region faces extreme violence, while the capital has been dealing with alerts tied to explosives and microtrafficking.
The coastal provinces of Guayas, Manabí, El Oro, Los Ríos, and Esmeraldas accounted for 1,156 violent deaths in that period.
Quito And Pichincha
Pichincha registered 121 violent deaths.
Since June 25, authorities have also reported presumed explosives with intimidating messages at different entities.
On June 29, two people were detained after a pursuit that led to the discovery of a presumed grenade-type explosive device.
The most visible incident came on June 30, when damage was reported around public institutions, including broken windows, cracked walls, debris on sidewalks, dismantled roofs, and exposed infrastructure.
Practical Takeaway
For residents comparing where to live in Ecuador, the useful point is the difference in risk profile. Some areas are dealing with very high violent-death numbers, while Quito's recent pattern includes intimidation incidents and explosive alerts around institutions.
That does not make one place simple or risk-free. It means local context matters more than a single national headline.
