Guayaquil's earthquake risk is not theoretical. The warning is about how the city was built, where it expanded, and which buildings may not be ready for strong shaking.

Specialists highlighted informal construction, older buildings and soft soils as risk factors. Guasmo Sur and Isla Trinitaria were named as areas built on filled mangrove zones where many homes could be exposed.

The Main Concern

Research cited in the report estimates that about 65% of Guayaquil has high vulnerability to an earthquake similar to the one recently seen in Venezuela.

Maria Elena Vargas, a seismic and structural engineer, said soft soils amplify vibrations. More than 200 buildings have been studied in the city.

Buildings designed under Ecuador's 2015 construction standard have better baseline expectations, while older pre-2000 structures may need closer review.
