Petroecuador says national fuel supply remains normal after a clandestine perforation caused a fuel spill in Esmeraldas.
The incident was recorded on the morning of June 14, 2026, in La Unión, in the canton of Quinindé. Petroecuador linked the spill to a clandestine perforation on the Esmeraldas-Santo Domingo pipeline at kilometer 105.
Response Timeline
The state company said its monitoring system detected the event, allowing it to activate a contingency plan with specialized technical staff. Petroecuador also stopped pumping immediately on the affected pipeline.
According to the company, the leak was controlled before 11:00, allowing crews to begin collecting spilled fuel. Operational teams worked for several hours with the Armed Forces to secure the area and prevent additional effects on energy infrastructure.
Supply And Safety Status
Petroecuador said:
- No people had been affected.
- No water sources had been affected.
- National fuel supply remained normal.
- The event did not compromise national derivative-fuel distribution.
The company also said it would begin legal actions to determine responsibility and sanction those involved. A similar incident was reported on the same pipeline on April 1, 2026.
What This Means For Expats
For most residents, the immediate question is whether this changes fuel availability. Petroecuador's position is that it does not: supply remains normal.
The larger issue is infrastructure security. Repeated clandestine perforations on a major fuel pipeline are a reminder that fuel logistics, environmental risk and public-security problems can overlap quickly in Ecuador.
