Broken Sidewalks And Informal Commerce Still Block Inclusive Mobility In Quito

Quito still has a daily accessibility problem: damaged sidewalks, missing signage, broken tactile guides, and informal commerce that blocks pedestrian space.

The Scale Of The Issue

At least 72,020 people with disabilities live in the Quito Metropolitan District, according to CONADIS records.

The mobility problems are visible in high-traffic areas including the northern sector, the hypercenter, the historic center, and the south.

Specific areas reviewed included República del Salvador, Shyris, Portugal, 6 de Diciembre, Naciones Unidas, Plaza de la Independencia, San Francisco, Cotocollao, and part of Solanda.

What Residents Report

Residents pointed to loose pavers, damaged sidewalks, broken tactile guides, unsafe pedestrian routes, and informal vendors occupying walking space.

One older resident said she fell near Naciones Unidas and needed stitches after opening her forehead. Another resident who uses a wheelchair said the poor condition of sidewalks makes travel difficult and dangerous.

City Plans

Quito officials say the city has worked on sidewalk rehabilitation, ramps, tactile flooring, obstacle removal, safe crossings, signage, and sidewalk geometry.

The city administration also points to a metropolitan development plan running through 2033, with commitments to accessible sidewalks and pedestrian-first improvements.
