Ecuador had another reminder this morning that small earthquakes are part of life here.
Primicias reports that the Instituto Geofisico registered a 3.7MLv earthquake on May 28, 2026, at 06:58.
The epicenter was 54 kilometers from Yantzaza, in Zamora Chinchipe, with a depth of 130 kilometers.
Authorities had not reported damage after the Zamora Chinchipe quake, according to Primicias.
Three Sismos In Two Days
Primicias reports that Ecuador registered three earthquakes between May 27 and May 28.
The first was a magnitude 4 quake in the Ecuadorian Amazon, with an epicenter in Puyo, Pastaza.
That movement was felt in several cities, including Guayaquil, according to citizen reports to the Instituto Geofisico.
The second was reported the night of May 27 in Bucay, Guayas, with magnitude 3.8 and depth of 5.0 kilometers.
Why This Matters
Primicias reports that Ecuador recorded 26 earthquakes between May 1 and May 28, according to the Instituto Geofisico.
The outlet also notes that Ecuador is in the Pacific Ring of Fire, and that between 2012 and 2025 the Instituto Geofisico registered 1,518 earthquakes of magnitude 4 or higher.
Emergency Contact
ECU 911 says Ecuador's emergency institutions coordinate through the single number 9-1-1. Calls can be made from fixed or mobile phones at no cost, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
What This Means For Expats
This was not a damage report, but it is a preparedness reminder. Keep an emergency bag, know where your building's safe areas are, and make sure your family has a contact plan if phones or internet go down after a stronger quake.
