Heavy Rain Triggers a Small-to-Moderate Lahar at El Reventador

A small-to-moderate secondary lahar was recorded at El Reventador volcano on the afternoon of Sunday, August 30, 2026.

The event began at approximately 1:20 p.m. in the Reventador ravine, on the volcano’s northern flank. The report attributes it to heavy rainfall and says it was not linked to an increase in the volcano’s internal activity.

Location and safety

El Reventador is in El Chaco canton, on the border between Napo and Sucumbíos provinces in Ecuador’s Amazon region.

The safety instruction is straightforward: stay away from the channels of the volcano’s rivers and ravines. A lahar can move through drainage channels even when the event is not evidence of a change in internal volcanic activity.
