Ecuador's Council of Higher Education has started an intervention process at Universidad Amawtay Wasi and suspended its top authorities.
What The Resolution Does
The decision was adopted on Wednesday, July 15, 2026, during the twenty-eighth ordinary session of the CES plenary.
The council said the institution simultaneously incurred three causes established in Article 199 of the higher-education law. It also applied the procedure in Article 45 of the regulation on creating, intervening in, and suspending universities and polytechnic schools.
As part of the resolution, CES suspended the university's top authorities while the intervention process takes place.
Who Takes Over
CES designated an institutional intervention and strengthening commission, known as CIFI, to temporarily assume the university's rectorate and administration.
The commission is responsible for actions needed to restore institutional functioning and guarantee continuity of academic and administrative activities.
What This Means For Expats
If your family has any tie to the university or to programs connected with indigenous education, watch official university and CES notices closely. The intervention is described as temporary, but no duration had been announced and the specific irregularities had not been detailed.
