Ambato started Monday with a transport problem.
El Universo reports that public-transport operators in Ambato restricted service on Monday, June 1, as pressure for a fare adjustment.
The current urban-bus fare is $0.30.
What Operators Did
El Universo reports that Ambato's urban and rural transport operators decided to work only from 08:00 to 14:00 while waiting for the municipal administration to address fare-leveling demands.
The restriction created mobility problems for students, workers and other residents before the morning workday.
Before 08:00, many people had to use pickup trucks and vans, paying $0.50.
Some intracantonal buses, under the municipality's contingency plan, ran through the city center with the $0.30 fare, but the outlet reports there were not enough vehicles to cover demand.
The Fare Numbers
El Universo quotes Manuel Escobar, manager of Ambato's public transport union, saying the technical fare is $0.51, the break-even fare is $0.43, and the socially fair fare is $0.40.
Escobar said the municipal council should evaluate compensation and targeted subsidies to balance the difference between the technical fare and the socially fair fare.
What This Means For Expats
If you live in or travel through Ambato, do not assume normal bus coverage while this dispute continues.
For errands, medical appointments or intercity connections, build in extra time and confirm local transport before you leave. Fare fights can change quickly, but the first day usually hurts commuters the most.
