Ecuador Moves 17 Provinces To Orange Alert For El Niño

Ecuador moved from yellow to orange alert for El Niño conditions after national emergency officials reviewed the event's evolution.

Scope Of The Alert

The measure covers 17 provinces, 143 cantons, and 491 parishes.

The included areas stretch across parts of Azuay, Cañar, Carchi, Chimborazo, Cotopaxi, El Oro, Esmeraldas, Galápagos, Guayas, Imbabura, Loja, Los Ríos, Manabí, Pichincha, Santa Elena, Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas, and other listed jurisdictions.

The Azuay list includes Cuenca, Girón, Nabón, Oña, Pucará, Santa Isabel, and Camilo Ponce Enríquez.

Government Actions

The national emergency committee approved the national action plan for El Niño and ordered it to be executed as a national priority.

Monitoring reports are to be issued every 15 days, and the risk-management and communications agencies are expected to carry out a public-information strategy.

Officials also referenced a budget of about USD 600 million for prevention and response work across ministries.
