If you're planning to drive this holiday weekend, the government's own data suggests you should plan carefully.
The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIT) released road condition data showing that only a small fraction of Ecuador's highway network is in top shape — and rain damage has made several major routes dangerous.
Road Conditions by Category
| Condition | Percentage | |-----------|------------| | Very Good | 8.61% | | Good | 32.62% | | Regular | 37.93% | | Caution Required | 20.84% |
About one in five kilometers of Ecuador's road network requires caution, and less than 9% qualifies as "very good."
Flagged Highways
The MIT specifically identified 14 highways requiring extra care during the holiday period (April 30 – May 3). Key routes include:
- E383 (Salto–Muisne) — Northern coast
- E20 (Esmeraldas–Quinindé) — Esmeraldas province
- E15 (Jama–Canoa, Pedernales–Chamanga) — Coastal corridor
Why Now
Heavy rainfall in recent weeks has caused widespread road damage across Ecuador. The combination of rain-weakened pavement, increased holiday traffic, and the state of many secondary roads creates compounded risk.
What This Means for Expats
If you're driving to the coast: Several flagged highways are on the most common routes from the highlands to beach destinations. The E15 coastal corridor (Jama–Canoa) and E383 (Salto–Muisne) are both on the caution list. Allow extra time and drive defensively.
The Baños–Puyo route (E30) is flagged. This is one of the most popular weekend road trips from the highlands. If you're heading to the Amazon, expect road damage and possible delays.
The Pan-American Highway is partially affected. The Tixán–Alausí segment (E35) is on the list. If you're driving south through the central highlands, plan accordingly.
Drive during daylight. With 20% of the road network in caution-required condition and curfew restrictions in 9 provinces starting May 3, daylight driving is strongly recommended.
Check for updated road closures before you go. ECU-911 and the MIT both post real-time road condition updates. Emergency number: 911.
