What is love? Baby don't hurt me. And now you can hear it live — on the Guayaquil waterfront.
The Festival
Live The 90s Festival is an international touring concert that brings together the iconic European dance and pop acts that dominated radio, MTV, and dance floors throughout the 1990s. The tour has played major venues across Europe and Latin America, and on March 26, 2026, it arrives in Guayaquil for what may be the most nostalgia-packed concert Ecuador has seen in years.

The Lineup — A Who's Who of 90s Dance
Haddaway — The Trinidadian-German artist behind "What Is Love" (1993), one of the most recognizable songs in pop music history. The track became even more iconic through the "Night at the Roxbury" Saturday Night Live sketches and the 1998 film. Haddaway continues to perform the song to massive crowds worldwide — and it sounds just as ridiculous and wonderful as it did 33 years ago.
Snap! — The German Eurodance group responsible for "Rhythm Is a Dancer" (1992) and "I Got the Power" (1990). "Rhythm Is a Dancer" sold over 5 million copies worldwide and remains one of the best-selling singles of the 1990s. If you have ever been in a European nightclub, a wedding reception, or a gym class in the last three decades, you have heard these songs.
Dr. Alban — The Nigerian-Swedish artist who turned dentistry into a pop music career. His hits "It's My Life" (1992) and "Sing Hallelujah" (1993) were inescapable across Europe and Latin America. Dr. Alban (real name: Alban Uzoma Nwapa) actually was a practicing dentist before his music career took off — making him perhaps the most successful career-changer in pop history.
Mr. President — The German Eurodance trio behind "Coco Jamboo" (1996), a sunny, irresistibly catchy song that charted in over 20 countries and became a staple of summer playlists, TV commercials, and school dances throughout the late 1990s.
Daisy Dee (representing Technotronic) — The Belgian-Dutch vocalist who performed with Technotronic, the group behind "Pump Up the Jam" (1989) and "Get Up! (Before the Night Is Over)" (1990). Technotronic's debut album sold over 10 million copies, and "Pump Up the Jam" remains one of the defining tracks of the late 80s/early 90s dance music explosion.
The Venue
The Palacio de Cristal (Crystal Palace) is a stunning glass-and-steel event venue located directly on Guayaquil's Malecon Simon Bolivar — the city's iconic waterfront promenade along the Guayas River. The venue offers:
- Waterfront setting with views across the river
- Air conditioning — crucial in Guayaquil's tropical heat
- Central location easily accessible from most parts of the city
- Nearby restaurants and bars along the Malecon for pre- and post-show dining
Tickets and Pricing
Tickets are available through Passline (passline.com), Ecuador's leading event ticketing platform. Pricing tiers have not been fully disclosed at press time, but based on comparable Live The 90s events in Latin America, expect categories ranging from general admission to VIP packages.
Pro tip: Passline tickets can sell out quickly for international acts in Ecuador. If you are interested, do not wait. International concerts in Ecuador are also frequently counterfeited — buy only through Passline or authorized outlets.
What This Means for Expats
- This is the most expat-friendly concert of the year. The entire setlist is in English, every song is internationally recognizable, and the target audience is anyone who was alive and conscious during the 1990s. You do not need to speak Spanish to sing along to every single song
- The price will be a fraction of what you'd pay in the US or Europe. International concerts in Ecuador typically cost $30-80 for general admission and $100-200 for VIP — compared to $150-500+ for comparable events in North America. The value proposition is extraordinary
- It is worth the trip to Guayaquil. If you live in Cuenca, Quito, or elsewhere, this is a valid reason to book a quick trip to Guayaquil. The Palacio de Cristal is a beautiful venue, the Malecon is enjoyable for an evening, and you can combine the concert with other Guayaquil activities
- Group outing opportunity. This is the kind of event that is better with friends. Rally your expat crew, book a table or VIP section, and make a night of it. The communal nostalgia of hearing these songs live is genuinely powerful
- Wednesday night timing. March 26 is a Wednesday, which means you may need to plan for a late night if you are traveling from outside Guayaquil. Consider staying overnight rather than attempting a late drive back to the highlands
- Safety note. The Malecon is one of the most policed and well-lit areas in Guayaquil. The Palacio de Cristal area is generally safe for evening events, but use standard precautions — take registered taxis or Uber to and from the venue, do not flash expensive items, and stay on the Malecon rather than wandering into adjacent neighborhoods after the show
