Guayaquil Keeps Airport Open Around the Clock as Bus and Cable Car Hours Change

Guayaquil’s airport and ground transport will follow different schedules during the September 17–30 curfew. Announcements issued on September 16 keep José Joaquín de Olmedo Airport operating around the clock, while setting earlier finishes for several city transport services. For travelers, the distinction matters when connecting a flight, a bus journey and the final trip home.

The curfew runs from midnight until 05:00. The published operating hours below are service arrangements, so they should be checked separately from that five-hour restriction.

Airport trips need supporting documents

An airport spokesperson said the terminal would continue operating 24 hours with its scheduled flights. Passengers were advised to keep their boarding passes accessible, either printed or on a phone, because street checkpoints may request evidence of the reason for their journey.

The municipality likewise instructed passengers going to or from the airport to carry the corresponding documentation and boarding pass showing that their movement is connected to a flight. That guidance concerns an airport journey; it should not be treated as permission for unrelated travel.

Check the last departure, including September 30

Metrovía’s announced timetable starts at 06:00, with the last unit operating until 21:00, from September 17 through September 29. Its specific schedule for September 30 is different: service starts at 06:00, but the final departure is listed for 22:30. The system urged passengers to plan ahead around the last departure.

For Aerovía, the municipality announced service from 06:00 to 21:30, with the final cabin departing at 21:10. The last-cabin time therefore deserves particular attention when planning an evening connection.

Guayaquil’s three bus terminals will serve the public from 06:00 to 21:00, according to the municipal arrangements reported on September 16. Passengers were asked to schedule their trips within that window. These are the terminals’ public opening hours; anyone booking an intercity journey should confirm the departure with the operator rather than assume every route runs throughout the window.

Markets and routine services

The city said retail markets would begin serving customers at 05:30, after the overnight restriction. Urvaseo’s normal waste-collection routes and schedules remain unchanged, and municipal hospitals retain their usual hours. Those announcements allow households to distinguish the services with revised times from those maintaining existing schedules.

What This Means for Expats

Plan a journey as separate stages: the flight or intercity service, the terminal opening time, and the transport needed at either end. A round-the-clock airport does not extend the published Metrovía or Aerovía timetable. Before booking, ask the airline, bus operator or accommodation provider how your particular arrival and onward connection fit the announced hours.

For an airport trip, organize the boarding pass and supporting documents before leaving, and keep them accessible if a checkpoint requests them. For an evening outing, work backward from the last relevant departure rather than from midnight. The difference between those times is the practical issue these new service announcements resolve.
