Public transport in Ambato is returning to normal after four days of reduced urban and rural bus service.

The service restriction began on June 1 as pressure for fare review. During the four-day measure, operators worked from 08:00 to 14:00, leaving residents to rely on pickups, vans and other passenger buses outside normal capacity.

The Agreement

Ambato Mayor Diana Caiza and municipal mobility officials announced an agreement on the night of June 4.

The deal includes $700 in fuel support for transport operators over six months. The measure is set to be reviewed in an extraordinary cantonal council session on June 8.

Operators committed to resume normal service on June 5 across 22 lines.

Schools are also returning to normal in-person schedules.

What This Means for Expats

If you live in Ambato or travel there frequently, the immediate disruption should ease.

The longer issue is not finished: the city still has to handle the fuel-support arrangement and the broader fare debate. If your household relies on buses, keep watching local transport announcements through June.
