Ecuador’s hospitals and health establishments are moving to a new international system for recording diseases, diagnoses, and medical conditions.
The system is the Clasificación Internacional de Enfermedades, Undécima Revisión, known as CIE-11, developed by the World Health Organization. It will replace the model Ecuador has been using until now.
What Changes
The update is meant to put medical records under the same standard across the health network. The Health Ministry said the process should make it easier for establishments to exchange information and reduce differences in disease classification.
The change also adds new categories and terminology for diseases and health conditions. Health officials say it will strengthen cause-of-death records and support more uniform follow-up when a patient is treated in different facilities.
Health Minister Juan Carlos Aveiga described the implementation as adoption of the WHO international standard for recording and classifying diseases under common criteria across the health system.
What This Means For Expats
This is mostly back-office healthcare infrastructure, but it can still matter if your care moves between hospitals, clinics, insurers, or medical specialists. The practical promise is cleaner classification and more consistent records, not a new appointment system or a new patient deadline.
