Ecuador is urging parents to catch up on delayed measles vaccinations as cases rise in the Americas and nearby Peru faces an outbreak.
PAHO has recorded 20,332 confirmed measles cases in 16 countries and territories in the Americas. Peru has more than 500 confirmed cases.
Ecuador's Campaign
Ecuador has advanced its vaccination campaign to preserve its status as a country free of measles.
The campaign has already administered more than 366,000 measles vaccine doses.
Health officials are asking parents to allow children to be vaccinated at an early age, especially when previous doses were missed.
Why This Matters Now
The warning comes before the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, when international travel and large gatherings can increase disease-transmission risk.
Ecuador's concern is not only imported cases, but gaps among children and adults who were not immunized in previous years.
What This Means for Expats
If you have children in Ecuador, check vaccine records now rather than waiting for a school or travel requirement to force the issue.
For adults, this is also a good time to confirm whether you had measles vaccination or immunity, especially if you travel often, work around children or plan international trips this year.
