Heavy rain caused flooding and damage in several parts of Santo Domingo late Thursday night, according to El Universo.
The report says emergencies began after 22:00 on June 25, with emergency calls coming after 23:00. Preliminary reports included flooded homes and damage to educational and sports infrastructure.
Affected Areas
In Ciudad Nueva, residents reported that the local sports area, including a synthetic field and coliseum, was completely flooded. The Unidad Educativa Modelo also had water enter its facilities, damaging teaching material.
In Las Playas, the problem was linked to the rising flow of the Pove River, with water entering homes around Zoila Guerrero and Ernesto Pinto streets.
The report also cited impacts in Comité Israel in the 17 de Diciembre cooperative, and Nuevo Jerusalén in Cristo Vive.
What This Means for Expats
If you live in or travel through Santo Domingo, treat heavy-rain nights as a real mobility risk. Check road and neighborhood conditions before moving after storms, especially near rivers, low-lying streets, and drainage-problem areas.
Emergency responders and rescuers were mobilized through ECU 911, according to the report.
