The Numbers

Ecuador's Servicio de Rentas Internas (SRI) — the national tax authority — published its 2025 operational report, according to El Universo (source).

The headline figures:

  • Total reported sales across the economy: "las ventas alcanzaron $ 267.196 millones" — $267.196 billion
  • Year-over-year change: "incremento significó un 9 % frente al 2024" — +9%
  • Tax revenue collected: "recaudación tributaria, que llegó a $ 21.501 millones, que representa un alza del 6,8 %" — $21.501 billion, +6.8%

Revenue growing slightly slower than sales is consistent with what you'd expect: a larger economy doesn't automatically convert to proportional tax gains, given credits, deductions, and collection gaps.

The Digital Shift

SRI's digital infrastructure is doing a lot of work:

  • Online portal visits: "canal virtual SRI en línea alcanzó 167 millones de visitas" — 167 million visits to the online portal
  • Access-credential transactions: "3,5 millones de transacciones vinculadas a claves de acceso" — 3.5 million
  • Third-party authorizations: "otorgaron más de 135.000 autorizaciones a terceros" — 135,000+ (these are the authorizations that let accountants and agents file on behalf of taxpayers)

The mobile service brigades stand out. Per the article: "1.275 en distintas provincias del país, un incremento del 226 % frente a 2024" — 1,275 brigades deployed across the country in 2025, a 226% jump versus 2024. That's a big field-presence expansion.

Enforcement Side

Tax control actions — audits, collections, reviews — generated "rendimientos por $ 578,61 millones" in 2025, or roughly $578 million. For context, that's about 2.7% of total tax revenue, coming from active enforcement rather than voluntary compliance.

In-Person Service

Even with the digital push, walk-in service stayed substantial: "más de 2,1 millones en la modalidad presencial" — more than 2.1 million in-person service sessions.

What This Means for Expats

  • If you're tax-resident in Ecuador — or run a business that files here — SRI's digital infrastructure is where you'll live. The online portal (SRI en línea) handles RUC consultations, VAT (IVA) declarations, income tax filings, vehicle tax, and third-party authorization. 167 million visits in a year tells you it works at scale.
  • Access credentials (clave de acceso) are essential. If you haven't set one up, do it. You need it to file online, check obligations, and authorize your accountant. The process requires a Cuenca (or local-office) visit for identity verification.
  • Third-party authorizations are the standard expat workflow. Most expats running businesses here work through a contador (accountant) with formal authorization to file on their behalf. 135,000 of those authorizations were issued in 2025. Make sure yours is current if you have one.
  • Mobile brigades are genuinely useful. SRI's 1,275 mobile service deployments in 2025 reached underserved areas and ran large taxpayer events. If you live outside a major city, watch for brigade announcements — they often bring services that would otherwise require travel to a provincial capital.
  • The enforcement number matters. $578 million in enforcement-generated revenue is substantial. SRI is actively chasing non-compliance. If you have obligations in Ecuador and haven't been filing, that's a growing risk, not a receding one.
